Ric is Chairman of HLBBshaw, Patent Attorneys, and a Partner with Restoration Partners, an IT advisory business, and has directed or chaired several other companies. In this interview he explains the behaviours and characteristics that he feels make for an exceptional NED - there are several things that make a difference.
Ric Piper, an experienced NED and Chairman, believes that exceptional NEDs exhibit most or all of the following behaviours / characteristics:
- Breadth of experience
- Team player, who leaves their ego at the door - a 'critical friend'
- Independent, able both to challenge and support
- Committed, willing to put in sufficient time
- Good at both talking and listening
- Have a sharp mind/good judgement
- Visionary and creative, focused on strategy
- Good at building relationships
- Self confident but not dogmatic
- Welcome feedback - all board members should expect to be evaluated
